Scott Dunlop, The Bivium GroupThis great article in a recent issue of the WSJ – http://on.wsj.com/jdeEIJ  talks about how Consumer starting VC funding in Q1 2011 tripled to $874M from $310M, while the business apps/enterprise side of the world “only” moved up to $2.3B from $1.9B – there has definitely been a pivot in both funding, and interest – although the trend and perhaps  continued achilles heel for the Boston software/tech market has been, until recently, the lack of critical mass of consumer-facing software/web companies.

The trends are changing, and the software engineering job market in Boston is certainly reflecting  that – increasing market value is being assigned to candidate who can work in fast release cycles, and have experience working in a consumer-facing environment,

You:
Employed, likely at a startup (or have in the past), relatively happy, current with high-end real world web 2.0 skills (Rails/RoR/Python/Django/Java etc). You LOVE to code just for the fun of it. You eat, sleep, breath tech/software.
There’s no doubt you can find a *job* – but, who cares about just another job? I’ll admit, I can get jaded with another *me-too* company, but, every once in awhile, comes an opportunity I DO  get excited about… And this is one of them:
“Do you have a pattern of contributing in a consistent & meaningful way to startups that have seen a success?”

“Does you have a github account? Does you contribute to open-source projects? Can you demonstrate that you’re a great, cutting-edge engineer that’s fit for a ground-floor startup?”

“Do you have experience in mobile Web, iPhone, Android with RoR/Java/Linux backend and/or online/ad tech/e-commerce domain experience? “

A BIVIUM EXCLUSIVE – location in the Cambridge/Arlington, MA area

Working directly with the Founder and CEO of this stealth startup who is about close their first A round in the high single millions. They already have clients lined up to buy their product.   Building the team from the ground up – multiple needs.

All prior startups these guys have worked on have been sold/acquired for strong exits – not just a small sale, but massive sales   Without an NDA can only say *mobile* and *e-commerce* * think transformative opportunity.

Openings – at least 7 as the team is empty — building from the ground up!
a) Hiring likely is a mix of Ruby/RoR/Python/Django/AJAX web apps – end to end.

b) Need a mobile hacker – J2ME/iOS/whatever

c) Need a Lead/Architect who has E-Commerce as their main background ( could be Java/J2EE or web apps with Ruby/RoR)
d) Need a Data Geek – Hadoop/Machine-Learning/ETL, profile info etc must understand big data.

e) DevOps person

f) Any super sharp/smart candidates (from fresh grads on up to Architect) who didn’t neatly fit into the first batch of needs – but have startup experience, and want to do it again!  Should have  code on github, outside coding interests etc

Big equity play here as you’re in at the groundfloor, but you*ll still get a market-rate salary as we all have bills to pay (think 60s to 130s)
We’re primarily looking for A+ players, the top 1-5% folks who have a job right now, but are looking to get in on the ground floor of something truly unique
Sounds interesting? Want to sign an NDA and learn more?

About Us:
The Bivium Group is a renowned technical recruiting firm with a sixth sense for crafting the right fit between opportunity and talent. Our focus is on building long-term relationships with both  clients and candidates which is demonstrated by our unsurpassed network of skilled talent and intimate knowledge of our client’s business needs.
We have earned a reputation for our exceptional service, our willingness to build long-term relationships, and the ability to fully grasp the often complex requirements of our clients.
Our wide-ranging knowledge of the software industry, and recognition in the marketplace only enhances our ability to help reach our shared goals – a lifelong partnership with you – and to offer  the very best recruiting experience available today.
I have been in the technology industry for over 20 years. I have worked within several startups including positions such as Vice President of Operations, General Manager and Founder at three  technology based startups – including my own consulting firm from the late 80s and into the 90′s. I left the startup world to join one of New England’s oldest and largest recruiting agencies  where I assisted in the meteoric growth of a new office in a new geography. My performance over the past few years has placed me in the top 1% of National Recruiters. My philosophy is  simple – I am a career partner to both our candidates and clients.

Continued signs of the market being red-hot are the VC funds themselves raising big, big rounds for their funding- Accel’s China fund raised 1.3B and Bessemer raised 1.6B their biggest ever. Time to close out the funding pools was down from 6 months to 10 weeks! Surely a sign of more investments to come over the next three quarters in 2011 — the Boston Software Engineer market will absolutely benefit from this new funding – full article here http://on.wsj.com/gRRViX

Outstanding opportunity - This is NOT your standard J2EE app.  It is high performance distributed computing, very mathematically and algorithmically intense.  It’s much closer to pure computer science than just putting together a lot of open source frameworks.

Hands-on tech lead, grow to VP LAMP stack, Cambridge, MA, profitable, <1 yr old $24M+ revenue http://ow.ly/4iRu7 @scottdunlop #jobs #boston

It’s pretty much the talk on both coasts, and everywhere in-between – with Facebook approaching a 75 B valuation, Venture Capitalists tripping over each other for up-rounds for $30-100 M B/C rounds – it’s a reasonable question to ask – are we in a bubble now? Would we know when we are in a bubble?

My personal thoughts — the M&A/IPO/funding market was so quiet for so long, that springing back to this accelerated/hot market as the “new normal” *feels* like a bubble, more than it is (but I’d say we’re well on the way to bubble land again!).

However, just like in all bubbles, the people who have a vested interest, i.e. are going to make money off the bubble – the VCs, investment bankers, etc are going to perpetuate the idea that “this time is different” — trust me — this time will not be any different from any other prior bubble – there will be LOTS of losers and a few winners — but, it doesn’t mean the ride, exhilaration and excitement of living through another “tech boom” won’t be a tremendous fun for everyone involved — but, temper your expectations and you’ll be much happy when the inevitable pop of the bubble comes … whether it’s one year or three, it’s hard to tell. But, just scan the headlines – the more stories about bubbles (like 2004/2005/2006 in housing) the closer we are getting to a peak.

In closing, I love this quote from a Venture Capitalist: ["There is effervescence, but no bubble," says Geoff Yang, a founding partner of Redpoint Ventures.] — nothing like parsing words – last time I checked my dictionary, effervescence means lots of little bubbles all around!

What are your thoughts? Are we in a bubble now, headed there?

Drop me a line to chat further – scott@biviumgroup.com – Boston’s #1 software engineer jobs/recruiter!

Scott Dunlop, The Bivium GroupAs someone who has been a lifelong entrepreneur, I always applaud programs such as this one – Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship – much more info on this WSJ article - http://on.wsj.com/i2k0eq

It’s become both a necessity and “en-vogue” to start your own company in recent years — but, I truly believe than unless we start promoting, investing and identifying Young Entrepreneurs, and giving them the guidance, assistance and mentoring they need — it’s a tremendously wasted opportunity — the future of the USA brainshare is at stake!

In the Boston, MA software engineering/computer science market – we have a fabulous ecosystem to promote these sorts of opportunities – VCs, universities, and senior/experienced mentors/entrepreneurs abound.

If you’ve got a great idea, or already building the “next big thing” — I’m always happy to network and be a “connector”.

Drop me a line – scott@biviumgroup.com – Boston’s #1 Software Engineer jobs/recruiters

Scott Dunlop, The Bivium GroupI’ve had the pleasure of being involved in several lead stories on hiring on CNN and Money magazine, although not this particular one — I could very well have echoed and shared some of the same observations in the local Boston, MA job market for software engineers — simply put, things are dividing into the “haves” and “have nots” when it comes down to software/coding skills.

I recently had dinner with one of the original architects of the Windows 3.x kernel who has long since retired to the West Coast and had a nice long conversation with a local entrepreneur who has moved his startup to the East Coast – both, lamenting friends, colleagues and companies struggling to attract “top notch” talent — there is definitely no lack of average talent out there, but it’s the top 1-5% where the market is at it’s fiercest for competition.

With Google and many of our clients routinely paying salaries close/at six figures for a recent grad, yet a similar salary for a solid Senior/Principal software engineer — one has to ask “why” — I think this article on CNN/Money covers that ground well:

http://money.cnn.com/2011/03/07/technology/tech_engineers_wanted/index.htm

The market here in Boston, and in Silicon Valley/New York  are coming up with lots of new companies, all looking to chase a finite number of stars …. if you are a “star software engineer” looking for a top-notch firm, it can be hard to differentiate between the buzz out there — do yourself a favour, and drop me a line to sort out the real star companies from the “pretenders”.

scott@biviumgroup.com – Boston’s #1 Software Engineer recruiter/headhunter

Scott Dunlop, The Bivium GroupHere at Bivium I spend about 70-75% of my time working with small businesses — the under 100 person company, and most of the time under 30 people — these are, and always will be, the growth engines of the American economy. We’ve benefited in the Boston/Mass. area that the VC/tech startup world has been very active for over 18 months — even during the depths of the “Great Recession” we were very busy with select clients upgrading their talent pool — the recovery is now more uniformly distributed and it’s becoming a self-sustaining recovery. As part of my volunteer work, I stay close in touch with “Main Street” and the struggles of the non-tech economy through a variety of Chambers of Commerce — finally, late last year, I started to see tangible efforts to invest in hiring, new inventory, which in turn will reinforce the need for software/services/IT for 2011 and beyond.

All of this is reflected in this article on CNN - http://money.cnn.com/2011/03/04/smallbusiness/small_business_hiring_adp/index.htm

and on this ADP payroll report

http://money.cnn.com/2011/03/02/news/economy/challenger_adp_jobs/index.htm?iid=EL

The “headline” about layoffs should not be too startling — even in the booming 90s, planned/reported layoffs in a smaller labour pool market typically were 200-250k a month — it’s a healthy element to a functioning macro labour market.

As much as ever, we need entrepreneurs, VC-backed startups and small businesses to continue their optimism — hiring, GDP growth and consumer expansion will always follow!

Reflecting the increasingly challenging recruiting market everyone sees – people going on the record to talk about how hard recruiting star candidates has quickly become.

I’m seeing the exact same trends, and VERY savvy juniors on up asking the same good questions – investors, burn rate, equity allocation, options details and future growth positioning — all critical questions and companies not prepared, or ill-prepared, should be ready to lose the oncoming talent war. Demographics in Boston area are working against us — better adjust expectations.

If you’re looking to get a leg up on the competition in the Boston, MA software engineering talent war — drop me a line – scott@biviumgroup.com – Boston area’s #1 software engineer recruiter!

Full Mass High Tech article is here http://bit.ly/cX6BLU

According to this CNET article – http://news.cnet.com/8301-1001_3-10282905-92.html?part=rss&subj=news&tag=2547-1_3-0-5 , for the 2nd straight quarter, VCs are becoming increasingly optimistic about the nascent recovery in the economy. This survey is specific to West Coast/San Fran VCs, but the polling is from June — very recent and useful data.

This reflects  not only what we are hearing, but what we are seeing in the past 3-4 weeks here in the Boston, MA software engineering job market — that firms that put the brakes on hiring in the Fall, and/or budgeting for lean operations, are starting to thaw out their recruiting budgets and make strategic hires. It’s a great sign for all of us, when the VCs show optimism, as the money, brainpower, and infrastructure that entrepreneurs bring to bear on a situation are usually the catalysts that bring us out of such an economic tsunami.

Although the national economic picture is still awful, as is the Boston job market, the software/IT industry has better weathered this storm, and is showing signs of being the first-mover to the recovery phase. With the Nasdaq leading all major indices this year (around +10%) and recent M&A activity (EMC for Data Domain), I remain confident we’re on the recovery path. That said – I’ve got nearly a dozen unfilled, and “HOT” jobs that need to be filled — the requirements are very specific, but if you’re waiting for “better days” to make a move — beat the rush and snag one of these outstanding jobs — drop Boston’s #1 Software engineer recruiter a line – scott@biviumgroup.com

Striking differences these days between the “haves” and the “have nots” as some VCs, CEOs and management teams throw in the towel, while others do the hard work necessary to see a company through a down market. In the past few days, major startups like Kraft startup matchMINE, and ex-ATG alum startup Allurent, have either ceased operations, or had significant layoffs.

At the other end of the spectrum, are daily conversations I am having with CEOs, VPs, and CTOs of both large and smaller firms — that range from mildly concerned to overly confident in their business model, (and continued recruiting). There’s no doubt this market is now shifting to a balanced market — an equal demand of jobs to candidates — however, because it’s happened to decline so far, so fast, the perception of most companies (and perception BECOMES reality for most) is that good candidates are in ready supply. The truth? Somewhere in the middle — great talent is still hard to find, but it *has* become just a bit easier to locate. Great companies? All in the eye of the beholder. There are risky big companies, and “stable” startups — it’s all about doing your due diligence. Market turbulence is an opportunity for great recruiters and great companies.

final-_2.jpgAs we enter the last day of the quarter, the news to report is mostly good – in fact Q1 2008 was the busiest placement quarter EVER for us – we remain upbeat and confident about the year ahead (notwithstanding some bumps). Two trends worth reporting — we have significant salary compression issues for Senior/Principal/Lead Software engineer candidates — and a lot of competition at those levels, means less room to grow, and a strong supply/demand curve — if you’re in this area and looking for a six-figure salary, be prepared to get grilled technically, inter-personally, and to bring your “A” game.

The best demographic to be in so far, has been recent (2005 to 2008) Computer Science graduates with firm and strong computer science fundamentals. With salaries in this year for the best (top 25%) growing at a well above-average rate, recent associate/junior cs candidates should see offers growing 5-15% from 2007 levels (for the top 10%).

There is a lot of “noise” out there – prognosticators telling us of impending doom, lots of companies (without real money, products or leadership) with jobs that won’t last, and plenty of “used-car” recruiters contending for your time. In uncertain times such as these, more than ever, should you consider partnering with someone like me – the top software engineer recruiter in the Boston, MA technology market — scott@biviumgroup.com

bivium logoRecent experience with two clients – let’s call them “Get’s it, Inc.” and “Bumbling fools.com” are two firms that recently approached us to recruit software engineers for their new Venture capitalized startups here in the Boston, MA area. As part of our due-diligence, we always want to evaluate the opportunity — who are the entrepreneurs, VCs, what space is the product in, and most importantly – how does the VP Engineering and/or other members of the team “sell” their company/role/position to us. Most tellingly, I like to ask “what do you think makes your job/company ‘cool’ to another star engineer?” Now, “Get’s It”, as their name implies, understands that they need to understand their strengths and sell to those strengths in this market — a star candidate I represent has a choice — and when there is a mutual fit, we want their strenghts to go recognized at each distinct phase of recruiting.  “Bumbling fools.com feels like they know they’ve got the greatest .COM since 1999 and that “any reasonable software engineer would just figure it out”.

WRONG ANSWER! We’re all very busy people, and nobody can sell their job better than the company — and if that is not a part of the entire recruiting process (from phone interview and each onsite interview – Plus time with a C-level executive) you will never hire someone you want. So, it’s not surprising when “Get’s It” has now hired 3 people out of 3 offers in the past few weeks while “Bumbling fools.com” has interviewed 8 people, made 2 offers and had 0 acceptances. At this point, if our client will not take our advice, as a contingent recruiter on the case, we’ll have to politely decline working together, until they can figure out how to sell themselves.

final-_2.jpgWe have placed the Director of Software Engineering for this new office in Nashua, NH (HQ in Lexington, MA) – if Nashua, NH is not a good commute we have several opportunites in the greater Waltham, MA area for startups looking for strong C# and/or C++ Windows User mode and kernel mode developers as well.

Happy Valentine’s Day to everyone – to me, today is not just about loving your significant other, or the person whom you may be in a relationship with, but taking a brief moment to really think about how we influence and effect others — loving those around us – including your co-workers, can be a simple thing – such as being a bit more patient or forgiving – perhaps simply offering a warm smile. Tonight, is a critical game for the Red Sox, game 3, after a very disappointing, but not surprising (Gagne!!!) loss in 11 innings. Now that our veil of invincibility has been lifted, we need to dig deep and show the Indians what we can do on their turf.

Already half-way through October, that means only 32 days until I leave on my ‘big’ vacation of the year – cannot wait!!

bivium logoThe market has never been hotter for top talent! As September rolls into October (holy cow!) we have more jobs piling up than we can possibly recruit for. Many of these are exclusive clients to The Bivium Group, and many of these offer great opportunities to take the next step in your career – perhaps an update on technologies you work with day to day, or the caliber of your peers. As the market (and other candidates) put themselves into new jobs, they are maximizing their market value at all times — it’s in crazy times like this, more than ever, critical, to align yourself with a resource who can help navigate these shark-infested waters. Choose to work with the best – I am currently ranked the #1 Recruiter in Boston on Linkedin. I’d love to see how we can partner together — scott@biviumgroup.com

bivium logoBarely a few days since Labor Day and the phones have been ringing off the hook – for all levels of positions. After a bit of a lull in the management recruiting side, we’ve got a number of really interesting new leads – among them:

a) Director of SQA for public software firm on 128/95 in Waltham, MA area - great long-term client

b) Director of Software Engineering – red-hot startup in Lexington, MA area – venture capitalized with tier 1 VC and outstanding management team.

c) Software Manager – Cambridge, MA and also a position very similar in the Lexington, MA area – both are VC backed firms – one is 2nd round and the other is what I would consider later stage.

If any of these could be of interest to you or your network – drop me a line – scott@biviumgroup.com
